Interesting facts...
Did you know that the definition for sound and noise is different?
Noise is a form of sound that is unwanted, while sound, is something that people enjoy. This is why noise is a subjective matter. Some people may find one sound musical, while other people find it annoying!
Did you know that noise restrictions go back in history as far as Ancient Rome?
In Ancient Rome, chariots were banned at night to prevent sleep disturbance and annoyance. Also, in medieval Europe, all horses and horse drawn carriages were also banned at night for the same purposes. The annoyance was also so great in the daytime that they had to replace cobblestone pathways with earth.
If you are travelling in a super-sonic jet, could you hear the engines of the plane?
When a super-sonic jet flies, it creates wakes (or waves) like the ones coming out from a boat going through calm water. The sound waves come out of the back of the super-sonic jet in a cone shape. Any observer cannot hear the sound until the shock wave reaches him. A passenger inside the plane is travelling at the same speeds as the sound waves so the sound waves will reach him easily (because sound waves travel outward from the engine, not just in a cone shape).
